The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has disengaged some street sweepers, supervisors and a service provider over alleged indiscriminate waste dumping along the Oworonshoki-Berger axis of Lagos.
LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the action followed sustained investigations and surveillance of the road median, which had become a recurring waste hotspot.
He said investigations established that some of the affected sweepers were involved in indiscriminate dumping, with the workers reportedly confessing to the act.
Gbadegesin warned that anyone involved in waste management must not contribute to the environmental problems they were employed to address.
He said LAWMA would continue to monitor identified waste hotspots and take enforcement action against personnel, service providers, residents and businesses found violating waste disposal regulations.
Meanwhile, two suspected illegal waste dumpers were arrested around the Berger-Oworonshoki axis.
One of the suspects, identified as Timileyin Ojo, allegedly used a wheelbarrow to dump waste on the road median, while the second suspect was accused of unauthorised waste collection.
The suspects were taken to the Oshodi Task Force Office, also known as the Mobile Court, for further investigation and possible prosecution under relevant environmental laws.
LAWMA urged residents, businesses and waste collectors to dispose of waste through approved channels and patronise only authorised Private Sector Participants.
