Joseph Aoun says a ceasefire is essential for advancing negotiations with Israel as the country enters a critical phase.
Speaking to lawmakers in Beirut, Aoun stressed that any direct talks must be precise and detailed, with unified national responsibility.
He said Lebanon’s priorities include consolidating the ceasefire, securing the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the south, recovering captives, and resolving border disputes.
Aoun described the ceasefire as a gateway to meaningful negotiations, noting it has both local and international support.
He also referenced backing from President Donald Trump following a recent phone call.
The Lebanese leader said the army would take charge after any Israeli withdrawal, including deployment along the southern border and maintaining security.
He warned that the opportunity for peace and stability must not be wasted.
