Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was on target, but it was not enough as Atletico Madrid lost to Real Sociedad in the final of the Copa del Rey.
Atletico Madrid were beaten 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw following extra time in the final played in Seville.
Real Sociedad made a blistering start, scoring the fastest goal in Copa del Rey final history through Ander Barrenetxea just 14 seconds into the game.
Lookman responded quickly for Atletico, scoring the equaliser to bring his side back into the contest.
Real Sociedad regained the lead before halftime after Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the penalty spot, but Atletico fought back late in the second half with Julian Alvarez scoring to make it 2-2 and force extra time.
Neither side could find a winner in extra time, sending the match to penalties, where Real Sociedad held their nerve to secure victory.
Despite the defeat, Lookman’s goal saw him make history, becoming only the second Nigerian to score in a Copa del Rey final after Finidi George.
The result means Atletico Madrid miss out on the title, while Real Sociedad claim the trophy after a dramatic final.
