The Benue State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has distanced its members from an attack in Otukpo Nobi, Otukpo Local Government Area, that reportedly left about 16 people dead.
Residents had alleged that armed herders carried out the attack in the early hours of Sunday, prompting youths and women from the community to protest at the Och’Idoma’s palace while carrying the bodies of the victims.
In a statement issued on Monday, MACBAN’s Benue State Secretary, Ibrahim Galma, condemned the killings and urged security agencies to investigate the incident before conclusions are drawn.
Galma said it was wrong to link the attack to Fulani herders without evidence, adding that no Fulani residents have been living in Otukpo and its surrounding areas since last year.
He alleged that Fulani residents were forcefully evicted from the area following previous disagreements, including the departure of the community leader in Otukpo, Chairman Yenusa, after efforts to restore peace failed.
The association also claimed that Otukpo-Nobi and neighbouring communities, including Okete, Amla-Icho and Otada, have existing communal disputes that should be considered during investigations.
MACBAN warned against linking the attack to a reprisal following the recent killing of its chairman, Ardo Risku, saying such claims could interfere with ongoing investigations by the police and other security agencies.
The group called for calm and urged its members and the public to remain law-abiding while investigations continue.
It also appealed to authorities to monitor social media discussions, warning that inflammatory comments could worsen tensions and undermine peace efforts in Benue State.
