Mexico’s Top Cartel Boss ‘El Mencho’ Killed in Military Raid

Mexico’s military has killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) cartel, in a dawn operation on Sunday in Jalisco state, local media reported.

The Defence Ministry said El Mencho died from injuries while being airlifted after the raid, according to Reuters.

The CJNG, originally based in Jalisco, has expanded across much of Mexico.

The operation sparked unconfirmed reports of arson and gunmen sightings in Jalisco and other states.

The U.S. had previously offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture, prompting the State Department to issue shelter-in-place warnings for U.S. citizens in Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León.

Authorities also confirmed the arrest of El Mencho’s wife in connection with the cartel’s activities.
