The convoy of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, was blocked by a mob along Gboko Road in Benue State on Tuesday.
Obi’s convoy was attempting to enter Makurdi after he arrived in the state by air, ahead of a planned visit to Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area to commiserate with communities affected by recent killings.
The youths, some wielding sticks, blocked the road and prevented the convoy from proceeding.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed it was aware of the incident, saying police operatives provided security for Obi’s movement.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Aondongu, said the reason for the obstruction remained unknown, adding that the command was monitoring the situation and investigating the circumstances.
Speaking at the scene, Obi condemned the obstruction as “totally unacceptable.”
He said he was in Benue to offer condolences to communities affected by the killings and questioned why he was prevented from accessing the area.
Meanwhile, the Benue State APC Publicity Secretary, Benedict Yaweh, said the party was not aware of the incident and denied any involvement by APC members.
He said, “We are not aware of the attack if truly they were attacked in Makurdi.
If they were attacked, it may be from their aggrieved supporters and not APC members. We are a peace-loving party and we don’t involve in thuggery.”
