Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s first woman prime minister, following the Sept. 23 parliamentary election.
El Mansouri, 50, is a former mayor of Marrakech and the outgoing minister responsible for national planning, housing and urban policy.
Her Authenticity and Modernity Party won 97 of the 395 seats in the House of Representatives, emerging as the largest party but falling short of the 198 seats needed for a parliamentary majority.
Under Morocco’s Constitution, the king appoints the head of government from the party that wins the most seats in the parliamentary election.
El Mansouri has now been tasked with forming a coalition government, with the process expected to involve negotiations with other parties.
Her appointment makes her the second woman to serve as prime minister in the Arab world, after Tunisia’s Najla Bouden, who held the position from 2021 to 2023.
The appointment marks a historic development in Morocco’s political leadership, with El Mansouri becoming the first woman to head the country’s government.
