National Youth Conference Opens With Call for Greater Youth Participation in Governance

The Federal Ministry of Youth Development has called for greater participation of young Nigerians in decision-making, leadership and governance as the National Youth Conference 2026 opens.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Maryam Ismaila Keshinro in her welcome address at the conference, said meaningful youth inclusion was essential to Nigeria’s national development, given the country’s large young population.

She said about 70% of Nigeria’s population is below the age of 30, stressing that young Nigerians should be recognised not only as beneficiaries of development but as partners, innovators, entrepreneurs and future leaders.

The Permanent Secretary said the conference provides a platform for young Nigerians to share their aspirations, priorities and ideas that could influence policies affecting their future and the country.

She said discussions at the conference would focus on youth participation, leadership and governance, as well as jobs, entrepreneurship and economic opportunities.

According to her, Nigeria’s large youth population could become a demographic dividend if young people have access to the skills, financing and opportunities needed to innovate and build businesses.

She also identified education and skills development as critical areas, calling for stronger quality education, technical and vocational training, digital skills and access to emerging technologies.

The Permanent Secretary said these areas would help young Nigerians compete and create opportunities in a rapidly changing economy.

Other issues listed for discussion at the conference include climate action, digital rights, peace building and national unity.

Keshinro also highlighted the role of the National Youth Service Corps in promoting national integration, noting that the scheme was established in 1973 following the Nigerian Civil War to strengthen understanding among young Nigerians from different parts of the country.

She urged young Nigerians to continue promoting dialogue, tolerance, inclusion and social cohesion, describing the country’s diversity as one of its greatest strengths.

The Permanent Secretary said the success of the conference would not be measured by discussions alone, but by the ability to translate ideas into practical and measurable actions.

She said the Federal Ministry of Youth Development would document the outcomes of the conference and give them consideration in advancing national youth development priorities.

Keshinro urged participants to speak openly, listen respectfully and propose solutions that are realistic, inclusive and achievable.

The conference brings together young Nigerians participating physically and virtually from different parts of the country, alongside government officials, development partners and members of the Nigerian Youth Parliament.
