NDC Exempts Obi, Kwankwaso from Anti-Defection Oath

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has exempted its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, from signing the party’s anti-defection oath.

The anti-defection policy requires candidates seeking elective offices on the party’s platform to sign indemnity forms and sworn affidavits committing not to defect to another political party after winning elections.

According to the NDC, the measure is aimed at strengthening party discipline, promoting loyalty, and discouraging the wave of defections that has affected political parties in recent years.

Despite the exemption for the presidential ticket, the party says the requirement remains mandatory for candidates contesting governorship, legislative and other elective positions.

The decision has drawn attention within political circles, with some observers questioning why the presidential candidates were excluded from a policy intended to ensure commitment across the party.

The NDC maintains that its anti-defection initiative is part of efforts to reinforce party ideology and strengthen voter confidence amid concerns over frequent defections by elected officials.
