NDC Zones 2027 Presidential Ticket to South, Backs Single-Term Rotation

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, with the party also adopting a single four-year tenure arrangement for its candidate ahead of the next general election.

The decision was reached during the party’s maiden National Convention, where delegates unanimously adopted a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State.

Under the arrangement, the party agreed that after the completion of a four-year tenure by a southern president, the ticket would automatically rotate to the North.

The move is expected to boost the chances of southern political figures seeking the party’s presidential nomination, including former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Obi had recently dumped the ADC for the NDC, citing persistent internal crises, endless court cases, divisions within the party and alleged external interference.

Also linked with the new political movement is Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former Kano State governor, ex-Minister of Defence and 2023 presidential candidate of the NNPP, who reportedly joined the NDC alongside Obi.

The development comes amid growing political realignments and coalition talks ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
