The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has organised a refresher training for its canine unit handlers, with two German experts helping to sharpen their skills in narcotics detection.
The training, held at the NDLEA Canine Unit Facility in Lagos, was conducted in collaboration with Germany’s Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) and focused on advanced obedience and control, narcotics detection, scent imprinting, search patterns, handler safety and deployment tactics.
Eleven Canine Unit personnel, including eight dog handlers, two veterinary doctors and the unit commander, participated alongside their service dogs.
Five other officers from NDLEA commands in Lagos also joined the exercise as prospective canine unit personnel.
The participants carried out practical exercises at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport baggage hall, APM Terminals Apapa and the airport’s NAHCO export shed.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), described the exercise as a boost to the agency’s narcotics detection capacity.
Marwa said the agency would continue to invest in the retraining and welfare of its canine teams, noting their role in detecting concealed narcotics at airports, seaports and border points.
He also acknowledged manpower and logistics gaps within the Canine Unit, including the need for more service dogs, personnel and boarding facilities, and said plans were underway to address the challenges.
The agency said the German experts recommended that the refresher training be sustained as an annual exercise.
