NEMA Receives 145 Nigerian Returnees from Libya

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has received 145 Nigerian returnees from Libya at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The returnees arrived from Benghazi aboard an Al Buraq Airlines flight at about 8:27 p.m. as part of the Assisted Voluntary Return programme facilitated by IOM in partnership with the Federal Government.

According to a statement issued by the Head of Lagos Operations Office, NEMA, Mohammed Olatunde, the returnees comprised adults, children and infants.

He said the breakdown included 122 adults made up of 46 males and 76 females, 29 children consisting of 13 males and 16 females, as well as 27 infants, including 17 males and 10 females.

Olatunde explained that officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service carried out biometric registration and documentation of the returnees upon arrival to ensure proper identification and facilitate their reintegration into the country.

He added that the returnees were provided with food, potable water, medical care and ambulance services for those who required immediate attention.

According to him, other support provided included luggage handling, logistics assistance and counselling services to ensure a safe, dignified and coordinated reception process for the returnees.

The Assisted Voluntary Return programme is designed to help stranded migrants return home safely and reintegrate into society with necessary humanitarian support.
