The death toll from massive floods that struck Nepal on Wednesday has risen to 752, according to Nepali authorities, with 2,502 people still missing.
The country’s disaster risk reduction agency said Sunday that nearly 20,000 security personnel have been mobilized for rescue operations, while 8,730 people have so far been rescued.
Search teams are also looking for more than 900 workers reported missing at various hydropower projects in the country.
Emergency workers have pumped air and dropped food into one tunnel but have yet to establish communication with anyone trapped inside.
In neighboring China, authorities have confirmed at least 16 deaths in the Tibet region, with 546 people still missing.
The missing include 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries, according to the Tibet Autonomous Region government.
It said 104 of the missing foreigners are Nepali nationals, while 49 are from India, 33 from Latvia, 18 from the United States and 15 from the United Kingdom.
The United States has increased its humanitarian assistance to Nepal to $3.6 million, from an earlier commitment of $500,000.
Meanwhile, a landslide detected Saturday evening created a new barrier lake on a river near the disaster zone in China, prompting authorities to evacuate rescue workers from the area.
Rescue operations remain underway as authorities continue searching for survivors and assessing the damage caused by the floods and landslides.
