NERC: Over 187,000 New Electricity Meters Installed as National Metering Rate Rises

Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in Nigeria installed more than 187,000 new meters between September and October, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said Friday, as part of ongoing efforts to close the country’s metering gap.

NERC’s latest Metering Fact Sheet showed that 80,943 customers were metered in September, while 106,822 new meters were installed in October, raising the national metering rate from 55.37 per cent to 56.07 per cent. The number of active electricity customers also increased slightly from 12.03 million to 12.07 million, while total metered customers rose from 6.66 million to 6.77 million.

Among DisCos, Aba Power recorded significant progress, raising its metering rate from 69.49 per cent in September to 78.20 per cent in October. Eko and Ikeja DisCos maintained strong performances, keeping metering rates above 84 per cent. Abuja and Ibadan DisCos continued consistent meter installations, contributing to overall national growth.

However, several DisCos remain below the 50 per cent metering threshold. “DisCos with metering rates below 50 per cent include Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola,” the report noted, highlighting the need for further improvements in these regions.

The commission said the continued expansion of meter installations is aimed at improving billing accuracy and closing the metering gap across Nigeria.
