NESREA Shuts Down Kano Rice Mill Over Environmental Violations

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down Fortune Rice Mills Limited in Kano for failing to comply with national environmental regulations.

The agency sealed the facility on Monday, May 18, 2026, following an investigation into public complaints about dust emissions and offensive odour from the plant.

NESREA said the company violated the National Environmental (Air Quality Control) Regulations 2014 and the National Environmental (Food, Beverages and Tobacco Sector) Regulations 2023.

Northwest Zonal Director Dr. Mudashiru Raheem led the enforcement team after the company ignored several compliance notices.

NESREA Director General Prof. Innocent Barikor expressed strong displeasure over the company’s conduct.

“The reckless attitude of some facilities toward the health and well-being of citizens and the environment is unacceptable,” Prof. Barikor said. “The health of Nigerians and the protection of the environment must not be sacrificed on the altar of economic gain.”

Barikor warned that NESREA would continue to enforce environmental laws without compromise. He urged citizens to report violations promptly, saying the agency relies on public vigilance to hold polluters accountable.

The shutdown of Fortune Rice Mills Limited underscores NESREA’s renewed drive to ensure industries operate responsibly, especially in major agricultural processing hubs like Kano.

The facility remains sealed until it fully complies with all required environmental standards.
