The Nigerian Bar Association has warned against the involvement of courts in the internal affairs of political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement, the association cited provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, which it says clearly restrict courts from entertaining such matters.
The NBA specifically referenced Section 83 of the Act, noting that it bars courts from taking jurisdiction over intra party disputes and from granting interim orders in such cases.
It expressed concern that some lawyers and courts are still engaging in actions that contradict these provisions, warning that the trend could undermine democracy and the rule of law.
The association also cautioned legal practitioners against filing what it described as disingenuous cases aimed at drawing the judiciary into political battles.
It warned that any lawyer found guilty of such conduct could face disciplinary action by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.
The NBA further urged the judiciary to remain vigilant and avoid being used for political manipulation.
