Nigeria Begins Construction of New National Grid Control Centre

The Federal Government has commenced construction of a new National Control Centre for the Nigerian Independent System Operator in Osogbo, Osun State.

The ultra-modern facility will replace the existing 64-year-old control centre and is expected to strengthen the management and monitoring of Nigeria’s national electricity grid.

In a statement, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the new centre would give the system operator real-time visibility of the national grid and improve its ability to respond quickly to system events.

Tegbe described the project as part of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address underlying challenges affecting electricity supply in the country.

The facility will feature an integrated Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system, large-format displays and analytics tools to help operators detect developing faults, plan preventive maintenance and optimise available generation and transmission capacity.

The government says the centre will also improve responses to system disturbances and support the integration of renewable energy into the national grid.

It is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s coordination within the West African Power Pool, while improving the physical and cybersecurity of critical electricity infrastructure.
