The federal government has commissioned a 581kWp interconnected solar mini-grid in Oke-Oyi community, Kwara State, expected to provide electricity to about 13,000 residents.
The project, implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency, comprises 1,336 solar panels and 84 batteries, as well as about 10 kilometres of distribution cables and transformers.
The mini-grid provides electricity to residential and productive users in the community, with improved power supply already supporting the growth of businesses and other economic activities.
According to details of the project, 12 welding businesses, two pure water companies, four grain mills and four aluminium artisan businesses have emerged in Oke-Oyi following improved access to electricity.
The intervention has also supported an ice-block production business and a cold-room and ice-fish depot, creating additional opportunities for residents.
Three electricity vendors are currently operating in the community, while three more are expected to be registered, including a female entrepreneur.
The project was developed by Nayo Tropical Technologies Limited with support from German Cooperation and the European Union through GIZ.
Authorities say the intervention is designed to expand access to reliable electricity, support economic activities and improve livelihoods in Oke-Oyi.
