Nigeria Evacuates 859 Citizens From South Africa As Repatriation Continues

The Federal Government says its ongoing evacuation exercise from South Africa has continued, with a third flight from Johannesburg bringing home 266 Nigerians.

The latest arrival brings the total number of returnees to 859 as part of the voluntary repatriation programme.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the evacuation followed immigration developments in South Africa and involves Nigerians who have been screened and cleared for return.

During the second evacuation, Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said the returnees were accompanied by officials of the Nigerian Mission in South Africa and received by government representatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

He added that President Bola Tinubu’s goodwill message was conveyed to the evacuees on arrival.

The ministry said additional flights are expected as more Nigerians complete screening and clearance procedures.

It added that the exercise reflects ongoing diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and South Africa to protect the welfare of Nigerian citizens and ensure their safe and orderly return.
