The Federal Government says it is prioritising the modernisation of Onne, Warri and Calabar ports to ease congestion at Lagos ports, reduce cargo transportation costs and boost economic activities across the country.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this in Lagos during the 2026 World Maritime Day celebration, adding that the government is also pursuing plans to develop six proposed deep seaports.
Oyetola says more than 70 per cent of cargo destined for other parts of the country passes through Lagos ports, contributing to congestion around Apapa and higher logistics costs for businesses.
He adds that the government plans to connect seaports, inland dry ports and production centres through road, rail and inland waterways to improve cargo movement and boost non-oil exports.
The minister says ongoing reforms, including the modernisation of Apapa and Tin Can Island ports, are expected to improve efficiency, attract investment, create jobs and make Nigerian ports more competitive.
