The Federal Government has reduced textbook assessment and ranking fees ahead of the implementation of the National Textbook Ranking System scheduled to begin in September 2026.
The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) announced the reduction on Wednesday, cutting the assessment fee from ₦2,000 to ₦1,500 per page and the ranking fee from ₦1 million to ₦750,000 per textbook title.
In a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Prof. Salisu Shehu, NERDC said the move is aimed at reducing the financial burden on publishers and authors participating in the new evaluation process.
The Council added that publishers who had already paid the previous assessment fee would receive refunds for the excess payment, with details of the process to be announced later.
The National Textbook Ranking System, introduced by the Ministry of Education, is designed to improve the quality of instructional materials used in Nigerian schools.
Under the policy, only textbooks assessed, approved and ranked by NERDC will be authorised for classroom use.
NERDC said the ranking process will assess textbooks based on content quality, curriculum alignment, accuracy and suitability before they are recommended for use in schools.
