Nigeria Set to Dominate Africa’s Textile Market, Says WTO Chief Okonjo-Iweala

Despite global trade disruptions, World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says Nigeria can capitalize on shifting supply chains to lead Africa’s textile and apparel sector.

Speaking recently, Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the resilience of the WTO system, noting, “Almost three quarters of world trade is still going on on WTO terms.”

She emphasized the need for diversification, saying many businesses are reducing over-dependence on single countries.

With a population of 220 million and a growing middle class, Nigeria is well positioned to attract new supply chains in textiles, pharmaceuticals, and agro-processing. “This is our time,” she said, “but it will not fall on our laps. We have to work for it.”

Addressing intra-Africa trade, Okonjo-Iweala called for value addition to African products, noting that 60% of exports remain raw commodities.

“We need to accelerate that,” she said, urging Nigeria to scale its fashion industry to capture the continent’s market.

She also highlighted the potential in digital trade and digitally delivered services, praising the innovation of Nigerian youth and women.

“If we can capitalize on that, we can capture a big slice of the African market.”

Her comments underscore Nigeria’s opportunity to strengthen its industrial base and boost regional trade, positioning the country as a key player in Africa’s economic growth.
