Nigeria Sets December 2028 Deadline for Final Analogue TV Switch-Off

Nigeria has set December 2028 as the deadline for the complete transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting, marking the country’s final analogue switch-off.

The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, saying the deadline represents the first phase of a broader digital broadcasting roadmap.

According to him, subsequent phases will focus on pay television services, studio development, designated production centres for content creators and nationwide audience measurement.

He said the commission had completed a proof of concept in about 7,000 homes in Lagos and had begun implementation in Abuja.

Ebuebu said the NBC would engage stakeholders, including the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, before announcing the remaining phases.

He added that switching off analogue broadcasting would free up valuable spectrum for use by sectors such as telecommunications, financial services and technology, with the asset expected to be professionally valued before allocation.

On obsolete analogue broadcasting equipment, he said the commission was developing a disposal policy based on expert recommendations and international best practices.

He added that reusable equipment could be repurposed, while unusable assets may be taken over by the government to minimise environmental risks.
