Nigeria Summons South African Envoy Over Protests, Alleged Attacks on Citizens

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa following protests and reported attacks on Nigerians and their businesses.

In a statement on Saturday, the ministry said the meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 4, at its headquarters in Abuja, where it will formally express the government’s concerns over developments that could strain relations between both countries.

The ministry said discussions will focus on ongoing demonstrations in South Africa and documented cases of alleged mistreatment of Nigerian citizens.

It noted growing concern among Nigerians over the situation but urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the federal government is committed to protecting its citizens abroad.

Nigeria and South Africa maintain strong diplomatic and economic ties, but relations have faced periodic tension in recent years over xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
