Nigeria has assumed the chairmanship of the African Telecommunications Union Conference of Plenipotentiaries as member states push for greater digital inclusion and investment in technology infrastructure across the continent.
Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Minister Bosun Tijani assumed the role on behalf of Nigeria at the close of the 7th Ordinary Session of the ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries.
Tijani said Nigeria would work with other African countries to expand digital infrastructure, strengthen digital skills and promote responsible innovation.
The conference adopted the Abuja Ministerial Declaration on Meaningful Connectivity for Africa, a framework aimed at improving affordable and universal digital access across the continent.
The declaration prioritises broadband expansion, regulatory cooperation, cybersecurity, digital skills development and increased financing for digital infrastructure.
Delegates also elected Zambia’s Engr. Kezias Mwale as the next ATU secretary-general. He is expected to assume office on Jan. 1, 2027.
