The Nigerian Air Force (Nigerian Air Force (NAF)) has carried out the airlift of sensitive electoral materials for the upcoming 2026 Ekiti State governorship election and several federal and senatorial by-elections across the country.
The operation, conducted between June 15 and 16, 2026, was carried out at the request of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)) to ensure the secure and timely distribution of election materials ahead of the polls scheduled for June 20, 2026.
According to a statement by the Air Force, the materials were transported from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to designated airports in Enugu, Rivers, and Kano states.
The exercise supported preparations for the Ekiti governorship election as well as senatorial by-elections in Enugu North (Enugu State), Nasarawa North (Nasarawa State), and Rivers South East (Rivers State). It also covered federal constituency by-elections in Dawakin Kudu/Warawa (Kano State) and Zuru/Shanga (Kebbi State).
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, commended personnel involved in the operation, describing it as part of the Air Force’s commitment to supporting democratic governance and civil authorities through Aid to Civil Authority operations.
He said the successful execution of the mission reflects the service’s readiness to support national institutions while maintaining operational effectiveness in its core defence responsibilities.
The Air Force also noted that its partnership with INEC remains critical to ensuring the safe delivery of sensitive materials, which it described as essential for credible elections and public confidence in the electoral process.
The operation, it added, highlights the role of the military in supporting national development and democratic stability alongside its security duties.
