Nigerian Air Force Reactivates Super Puma Helicopter After Three-Year Grounding

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reactivated its Super Puma Helicopter after it was grounded for three years due to a main rotor hub issue.

The reactivation was officially commissioned by the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, at the 205 Rotary Wing in Ikeja, Lagos State.

Air Marshal Aneke emphasized the helicopter’s vital role in enhancing NAF’s rotary wing capabilities, highlighting its versatility in troop transport, search and rescue, casualty evacuation, and logistics support.

“The Super Puma has proven to be a workhorse, demonstrating effectiveness in Operation Hadin Kai,” he said.

“This event is not just about bringing an aircraft back but reflects our commitment to maintaining a highly motivated and mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive air power in support of national security objectives,” Aneke added.

The CAS also noted the helicopter’s role in joint operations with the Army and Navy, especially in maritime and coastal environments, reinforcing Nigeria’s counterinsurgency and anti-banditry efforts.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for supporting critical acquisitions and the activation of legacy platforms.

Air Marshal Aneke urged personnel operating the Super Puma to maintain the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

He also acknowledged retired Air Commodore Taiwo Badru and the 205 Rotary Wing technicians for their crucial roles in restoring the aircraft.

The Super Puma’s return is expected to strengthen the Nigerian Air Force’s operational reach across multiple security theaters nationwide.
