The Nigerian Army has arrested a soldier, Private Mohammed Yusuf, who was declared wanted over his alleged involvement in supplying military accoutrements to terrorists and other criminal elements.
Yusuf was apprehended by troops of the 7 Provost Group, Operation HADIN KAI, at Jidari Bus Stop in Maiduguri, Borno State, while allegedly attempting to flee to the Republic of Cameroon.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement on Sunday by the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Muhammed Goni, who said the operation followed credible human intelligence.
According to Goni, preliminary investigations showed that the suspect, a member of the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps, absconded from his unit on July 7, 2026, before relocating to Maiduguri, where he allegedly went into hiding in the Gomari Costain area of Jere Local Government Area with the help of an associate.
"Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have arrested a soldier recently declared wanted by the Nigerian Army for his alleged involvement in the illegal supply of military accoutrements to terrorists and other criminal elements, in a sustained effort to dismantle criminal support networks," Goni said.
He said Yusuf had been declared wanted by the Army on July 23 over the allegations and was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. on July 25 while allegedly trying to escape to Cameroon.
The Army said the suspect is currently in the custody of the 7 Provost Group, where investigations are continuing to determine the full extent of his alleged activities and identify other possible collaborators.
Goni said the arrest underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and the Nigerian Army's resolve to hold personnel accountable for actions that undermine military discipline, ethics and national security.
"The military remains resolute in upholding professionalism, accountability and the highest standards of integrity in the conduct of ongoing counter-insurgency operations," he said.
He also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, describing public cooperation as vital to restoring lasting peace and security in the North-East.
The arrest comes days after the Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps declared Yusuf wanted, saying preliminary investigations linked him to the alleged illegal sale and supply of military uniforms and other accoutrements to terrorists and criminal elements after he absconded from his unit.
