Nigerian-British Actress Wunmi Mosaku Secures First Oscar Nomination

British-Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku has earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 2025 film Sinners.

Mosaku received the nomination at the 98th Academy Awards for her portrayal of Annie in the film directed by Ryan Coogler.

The recognition marks the first Oscar nomination of her career and is considered a major milestone for the Nigerian-born actress.

The movie, which blends supernatural and historical themes, dominated this year’s nominations with a record number of nods, with several cast members also earning recognition.

Michael B. Jordan received a Best Actor nomination while Delroy Lindo was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for their roles in the same film.

Born in Zaria, Nigeria, Mosaku has built an international acting career with roles in television series such as Lovecraft Country and Loki, as well as films including His House.

Her Oscar nomination has been widely celebrated as another milestone for actors of African descent in global cinema, as the awards ceremony takes place on March 15 in Los Angeles.
