Nigeria’s National Counter Terrorism Centre has been formally recognised as an African Union Regional Centre of Excellence for West Africa and the Sahel.
The accreditation was announced by the Acting Director of the African Union Counter Terrorism Centre, Dr. Idriss Mounir Lallali, at the African Lessons Learned Forum held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre in Abuja.
The centre operates under the Office of the National Security Adviser.
President Bola Tinubu had declared the centre a Regional Centre of Excellence for West Africa and the Sahel in April 2024 during the High-Level African Counter-Terrorism Meeting in Abuja.
The recognition formally positions the centre as a regional hub for intelligence sharing, operational coordination, specialised training and capacity building in efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
The accreditation also strengthens Nigeria’s role in supporting African Union member states, particularly those in West Africa and the Sahel, through increased counter-terrorism cooperation and institutional capacity development.
