NMA Condemns EFCC Over Alleged Assault of Medical Personnel in Akwa Ibom

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a stern directive to its branches nationwide following the alleged assault, brutalization, and detention of Professor Eyo Ekpe and other medical staff by suspected operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The incident, which reportedly took place within the premises of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), has drawn sharp condemnation from the NMA National Officers Committee (NOC). Under the leadership of Dr. (Prof.) Afekhide Ernest Omoti, the association described the operatives' actions as "reckless and barbaric," particularly as they targeted personnel rendering life-saving services.

In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Prof. Olayinka Atilola, the NMA confirmed that high-level engagements are underway to seek redress at the highest levels of government.

The association signaled that it will no longer tolerate the persistent harassment of medical doctors in the country.

The NMA President has directed the Akwa Ibom State branch to proceed with all lawful measures necessary to resolve the matter.

Furthermore, the national leadership mandated all State and FCT branches to demand the immediate identification and prosecution of any law enforcement agent involved in future unwarranted harrassment of doctors.

The NMA clarified that while it does not oppose law enforcement agencies carrying out their statutory duties, such actions must be conducted within the bounds of the rule of law and common decency.

The association emphasized that its minimum demand for truce in such conflicts will henceforth be the prosecution of erring officers.

The directive serves as a formal warning to law enforcement establishments to maintain the highest ethical standards when operating within medical facilities.

As of press time, the Akwa Ibom State branch of the NMA remains in full consultation with the national body to determine the next phase of their response to the UUTH incident.
