NMA South-West Backs Resident Doctors’ Nationwide Strike, Demands Better Pay and Conditions

The South-West caucus of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on Tuesday threw its weight behind the nationwide strike declared by the National Association of Resident Doctors, saying the region’s doctors will stand in solidarity until their welfare concerns are resolved.

In a joint statement read at a news conference, Caucus Chairman Dr. Adeniyi Fasanu and Secretary Dr. Akinluyi said the group “stood firmly behind NARD’s decision to embark on strike.” The caucus said it was unhappy with how national leaders handled negotiations and urged urgent government action.

“We condemn the silence of the National Officers Committee (NOC) on the progress of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) meeting.

“It was observed that negotiations between the NMA, the Federal Government, and the Ministry of Health have not met the expectations of our members.

“The Federal Government’s attention has not been adequately drawn to the deplorable working conditions and poor remuneration of Nigerian doctors, which remain sub-optimal,” the statement read.

The move follows a national ultimatum by NARD after what doctors called an unsatisfactory circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission on revised allowances. NARD’s demands include full payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, review of hazard allowances, and implementation of earlier collective-bargaining agreements.

The South-West caucus also praised governors who have improved doctors’ pay locally, singling out Ekiti’s Biodun Oyebanji and Oyo’s Seyi Makinde for positive action, and urged the federal government to match that commitment nationwide.

Health observers warn the strike could disrupt services across tertiary hospitals if talks stall; the NMA has asked the government to resume meaningful negotiations to avert a wider collapse of public health care.
