The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has accused the Chairman of the Ibadan South-West Local Government Council, Hon. Kehinde Adeyemi Akande, of leading a coordinated attack on federal railway infrastructure in Oyo State.
In a press statement issued Tuesday, the NRC disclosed that rail assets worth several millions of naira were destroyed and carted away during an incident on Monday, February 2, 2026. The corporation alleged that Akande personally led a group comprising "thugs," individuals dressed in Nigerian Army uniforms, and operatives of the Oyo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun, to the Mile One-Ten axis.
According to the NRC, the group vandalized fixed assets, including:
Steel rails and concrete sleepers.
Signal poles and count boards.
Billboards and security fences belonging to NRC tenants.
The corporation stated that Akande claimed to be acting on the instructions of the Oyo State Governor to clear the land for local commercial development. However, the NRC emphasized that the affected area is a "statutorily protected railway right-of-way".
Efforts by the NRC Police Command to repel the action were reportedly met with stiff resistance, forcing officers to withdraw from the scene to avoid further escalation.
NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, described the incident as a "grave violation of federal assets" and appealed to the Oyo State Governor to call the local government chairman to order. Opeifa warned that the corporation would pursue "appropriate security, administrative, and legal actions" to safeguard its property and prevent future encroachments.
The Oyo State Government has not yet issued a formal rebuttal. When contacted, the State Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, requested time to review the NRC's claims before providing a detailed response.
