NRC Confirms Train Incident, No Fatalities

The Nigerian Railway Corporation says a train incident occurred near Asham on Monday morning but confirmed that no fatalities were recorded.

In a statement issued Monday, the corporation’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kayode Opeifa said the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. and involved a rear locomotive and a passenger coach.

Preliminary findings indicate that the rear locomotive made contact with the coach directly behind it due to a coupling issue.

The corporation said some passengers sustained injuries and were attended to before being taken to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.

According to the NRC, emergency response protocols were activated immediately, while technical teams and officials from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau have been deployed to investigate the incident.

The corporation also clarified that the incident was not a derailment, contrary to some reports.

It explained that a derailment occurs when the wheels of a train leave the tracks, making it impossible for the train to continue its journey.

However, the train involved in the Asham incident remained on track and proceeded to Idu Station where passengers safely disembarked.

The NRC urged the public and the media to rely on verified information and avoid inaccurate descriptions of the incident, adding that passenger safety remains its top priority.
