The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has warned its personnel against getting involved in debt recovery for members of the public, saying the practice falls outside the corps’ core mandate.
The warning was given by the Director of Legal Services at the NSCDC National Headquarters, Aminu Alilu, during a training workshop for personnel of the Akwa Ibom State Command.
Alilu said the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 prohibits torture, inhuman treatment and the arrest of people on behalf of suspects.
He also stressed that officers must record arrest and interrogation proceedings with cameras to ensure transparency and provide credible evidence for prosecution.
He added that suspects must be allowed access to a lawyer, a Legal Aid Counsel, a Justice of the Peace or a family member during interrogation, in line with the law.
The NSCDC legal director urged investigators to handle evidence properly and maintain professionalism, while the Akwa Ibom State Commandant, Jonathan Olariche, charged personnel to apply the lessons from the training and serve Nigerians with dignity.
