Former United States President Barack Obama has said governments around the world could perform better if women were given the opportunity to lead for two years.
Obama made the remark during a conversation with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin at Salem State University in Massachusetts, where he reflected on leadership, governance and the importance of creating opportunities for younger generations.
Recalling an idea he had while serving in the White House, Obama said he had wondered what would happen if women were placed in charge of every government for two years and the results were assessed afterwards.
He said he did not expect such a change to produce perfect governments, but expressed confidence that the overall outcome would be better.
The former president's comments came as he discussed his views on leadership and the need to give younger generations greater opportunities to take on positions of responsibility.
The hour-long event at Salem State University attracted about 3,600 people to the school's O'Keefe Sports Complex, while hundreds of others watched from a satellite venue on campus.
Obama had made a similar argument in 2019 during a leadership event in Singapore, where he said he believed countries would improve if women were given the opportunity to run their governments for two years.
