Obi Says Exit From ADC Wasn't About Atiku

Former Anambra State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, has dismissed claims that he is avoiding former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking on Friday during the Spier Dialogue 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa, Obi described Atiku as a respected leader and elder brother, insisting there was no rift between them.

“There are very few human beings who are as close as I am to Atiku. So I can’t be running from him,” Obi said.

He explained that his political decisions were based on principle rather than personal differences, stressing that he “does things differently.”

Obi’s remarks come months after the collapse of the opposition coalition involving the African Democratic Congress.

Both Obi and Atiku had initially aligned under the ADC to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election before the alliance later broke apart over internal disagreements and legal disputes.

Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso subsequently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, calling for an end to litigation-driven politics.
