Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has urged young Nigerians to resist ethnic and religious division, warning that political actors often exploit identity fault lines when unable to compete on ideas and performance.
In a post on X, Obi referenced the aftermath of the 2023 general elections, particularly in Lagos, saying public discussions shifted away from governance, development and competence toward tribal and ethnic sentiments.
He said many Nigerians were unknowingly drawn into narratives “carefully designed by others” and warned that similar patterns were re-emerging in more subtle forms.
Obi stressed that respected religious leaders, including Pastor Enoch Adeboye, should not be drawn into political attacks, describing him as “one of the foremost fathers of faith” who has consistently preached peace, unity and national reconciliation.
He added that it would be unfair for younger Nigerians to shift responsibility for national development to older figures, insisting that the task of building a better country rests on the younger generation.
“Do not allow anyone to recruit you into hatred,” he said, urging citizens to verify claims, question narratives and resist manipulation.
He concluded that “a new Nigeria is possible” if citizens choose unity over division and prioritize the national interest over narrow agendas.
