Obi Warns Against Normalising School Abductions, Cites Decline in National Outrage

2027 Presidential candidate Peter Obi says Nigeria is becoming dangerously desensitised to school abductions, warning that repeated attacks on students reflect a broader failure of leadership and public accountability.

In a post on social media, Obi referenced the 2014 Chibok girls’ abduction, which sparked the global #BringBackOurGirls campaign, saying the incident united Nigerians and drew strong international attention.

He argued that since then, successive waves of school kidnappings have continued with less sustained outrage, despite what he described as worsening frequency under recent administrations.

Obi claimed that Nigeria recorded multiple school abductions under former President Muhammadu Buhari and said over ten similar incidents have already occurred within the first three years of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, though he provided no official breakdown to support the figures.

He added that the reduced public pressure and international attention compared to Chibok raises concerns that insecurity is gradually being treated as normal.

The former governor also criticised what he described as misplaced priorities among political leaders, saying too much attention is being given to electoral positioning rather than urgent national challenges such as insecurity, poverty and economic hardship. He warned that Nigeria’s global reputation is being damaged by persistent insecurity and governance failures.

While acknowledging the country’s challenges, Obi rejected descriptions of Nigeria as a “now disgraced nation,” but said continued insecurity and hardship risk deepening reputational damage if left unaddressed.

He called for leadership that is “competent, compassionate and accountable,” and urged young Nigerians not to accept what he described as systemic failure.

Obi ended his message with a call to action for youth engagement, urging young Nigerians to remain alert and demand better governance rather than become indifferent to worsening insecurity.
