The Federal Government says activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary will be low-key, with emphasis on reflecting on the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers and heroines.
The announcement comes as the government declares Thursday, October 1, a public holiday to mark the anniversary.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who announced the holiday in Abuja, urged Nigerians to use the occasion to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
He said Nigeria’s diversity remains a source of strength and called on citizens to remember the contributions of the nationalists who worked for the country’s independence from colonial rule.
The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening national security and improving public safety, saying this would create an environment where Nigerians can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
The government said the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey since October 1, 1960, and the contributions and sacrifices that laid the foundation for the country’s development.
