Oil exploration activities have officially commenced on Eba Island in Ogun State following the Federal Government's approval of the state as a Frontier Exploration Area.
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the development in a post on X, saying the project followed the grant of Frontier Exploration Status by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources.
According to the governor, key preliminary stages, including the Environmental Impact Assessment, bathymetric, topographical and geotechnical surveys, have been completed. He added that all required approvals have also been obtained from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission and the Federal Ministry of Environment.
Abiodun said civil works have begun, while well intervention and re-entry equipment has already been deployed to the site.
He said the project is aimed at unlocking the state's hydrocarbon resources, creating jobs, attracting investment and boosting revenue.
"We remain committed to harnessing these resources responsibly to create jobs, attract investment, generate sustainable revenue, and position Ogun State as a leading player in Nigeria's energy sector," the governor said.
He also assured residents that the state government would continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
