Olukoyede Calls for Zero Tolerance of Corruption as Nigeria Marks 66th Independence

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has called for greater accountability and zero tolerance for corruption as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

Olukoyede made the call in Abuja on Thursday, Oct. 1, in his Independence Day message, saying Nigerians must support ongoing government reforms by rejecting corrupt practices in all forms.

He said efforts to strengthen key areas of the country were important steps toward building a better nation, describing them as “building blocks of the greater nation we desire.”

Olukoyede urged Nigerians to complement the government’s reform initiatives with a stronger commitment to accountability and responsible conduct.

“At 66, Nigeria has come a long way. Independence has offered us liberty and self-determination. We are also making considerable progress in nation building,” he said.

He said the progress being made in nation building would only have lasting value if Nigerians collectively rejected corruption and other practices that could undermine national development.

“We cannot be building and allow corrupt practices to vitiate our efforts. Progress only comes with purposeful rejection of compromises,” Olukoyede said.

The EFCC chairman expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, urging citizens to play their part in building a country where reforms and development efforts are supported by integrity and accountability.

“Nigeria will surely get better,” he said.
