Osun Gov. Ademola Adeleke has demanded the immediate release of Peoples Democratic Party state chairman Sunday Bisi, alleging that he was arrested shortly after voting in Saturday’s governorship election.
Adeleke made the allegation in a statement posted on his official X account and signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.
The governor said Bisi was arrested at his home in Ilesa after returning from his polling unit and taken to an undisclosed location.
“Information reaching me indicates that Bisi was accosted in his home in Ilesa shortly after he returned after voting, and whisked away to a yet-to-be-known location,” Adeleke said.
Adeleke said no reason had been given for the alleged arrest, which he described as an “abuse of law enforcement” and an attack on the democratic process.
He further alleged that Bisi’s arrest was part of a broader attempt to interfere with the collation of election results and give the All Progressives Congress unhindered access to the process.
“This latest sweep on my supporters, I have authoritatively learnt, is part of a broader plan to give the APC unhindered access to change results at collation centres and upturn our wins at the poll,” Adeleke said.
The governor did not provide evidence to substantiate the allegations.
He called for Bisi’s immediate release and demanded the release of other people he described as “political prisoners” across the state.
“Election should be about the people freely giving their mandates to the person of their choice without threat or force,” Adeleke said.
As of the time of Adeleke’s statement, Bisi’s whereabouts remained unclear. No security agency had publicly claimed responsibility for the alleged arrest or stated why the PDP chairman was reportedly taken into custody.
The allegation comes as voting and the collation of results continue in the Osun governorship election, with political parties and candidates closely monitoring the process.
