All Progressives Congress governorship candidate Munirudeen Oyebamiji has described Saturday’s Osun governorship election as largely peaceful in his area and expressed confidence in winning the poll.
Oyebamiji spoke after casting his ballot, saying voters turned out in large numbers, and that electoral officials and security personnel were present at the polling locations he visited.
“So far, my assessment is that everything is going on peacefully here,” Oyebamiji said.
The APC candidate acknowledged reports of attempts to disrupt voting in some areas but said security personnel were responding to the incidents.
“The security people are attending to where the reports are. So far, one or two places where they want to cause trouble, the police are in charge,” he said.
Oyebamiji urged voters to remain calm and allow electoral officials and security agencies to perform their duties throughout voting and the collation of results.
“I want to appeal to the people that it is important that they need to conduct themselves, and they need to vote peacefully,” he said.
On reports that a person was arrested with firearms, Oyebamiji declined to comment, saying security agencies should handle the matter.
“I don’t have any reaction to that. I think the security officers at least will do their job,” he said.
The APC candidate also expressed confidence in defeating his opponents and emerging as the next governor of Osun State.
“My expectation is that I am going to carry the day,” Oyebamiji said.
The Osun governorship election is being closely watched as voters across the state choose their next governor. Results will be declared at polling units before being collated through the official Independent National Electoral Commission process.
