Oyo Denies Paying Ransom for Abducted Pupils, Teachers in Oriire Attack

The Oyo State Government has dismissed reports alleging that it paid ransom to secure the release of pupils and teachers abducted by bandits in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the claims as false and misleading.

Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, said in a statement on Friday that the allegation was “far from the truth” and a deliberate attempt by “irresponsible bloggers” to misinform the public.

He stressed that while both the state and federal governments, alongside security agencies, are working to secure the safe release of the abductees, no ransom had been paid either directly or indirectly.

Oyelade urged members of the public to disregard the reports and rely only on verified information from official government channels, adding that efforts were ongoing to rescue the victims.

The statement comes amid continued concern over the fate of pupils and teachers abducted on May 15 during an attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area, where one teacher was killed and several others were taken away by armed men.

Security agencies and government authorities are still coordinating efforts to ensure the safe return of the abductees.
