Oyo Govt Warns Against Spread of False Security Information

The Oyo State Government has cautioned residents against spreading unverified security-related information, warning that misinformation could heighten public fear and disrupt ongoing security operations in the state.

The warning was issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser on Security to Governor Seyi Makinde, Abayomi Fagbenro, following rising tension linked to a recent terrorist attack in Ogbomoso and subsequent rumours circulating on social media.

Fagbenro stressed that false information not only creates panic but can also mislead security agencies working to rescue victims and restore order. He urged residents to always verify any security-related updates before sharing them.

According to him, citizens must adopt responsible reporting practices, adding that both misinformation and silence in the face of real threats can endanger lives and slow down emergency responses.

He also warned against “false negatives,” where residents ignore or fail to report genuine suspicious activity, noting that timely information from the public remains critical to effective security operations.

“The public is urged to ensure that any information they communicate is accurate and verified to avoid misinformation that may affect ongoing security operations and the confidence of the people,” Fagbenro said.

He further reminded residents that security is a shared responsibility, urging them to observe carefully and report only information they can reasonably confirm to appropriate authorities.

The statement comes after a rumour spread on Tuesday claiming that Ladoke Akintola University of Technology had been attacked again and shut down. The claim was later confirmed to be false.

Tension remains high in parts of Ogbomoso following last Friday’s attack on three schools on the outskirts of the area. During the incident, armed attackers killed two teachers, while another abducted teacher was reportedly beheaded.

Authorities say seven students, 18 children, and six teachers are still in captivity, as security agencies intensify rescue efforts.

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology continues to function despite the rumours, while security operatives maintain surveillance across affected communities.
