Political economist Prof. Pat Utomi has urged President Bola Tinubu to undertake a complete restructuring of Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking at the Annual Democracy Day National Dialogue in Ikeja on Thursday, Utomi emphasized the need for restructuring to strengthen Nigeria's democracy.
The event, themed "Democracy Without A Democratic Constitution: Which Way for Nigeria?" was organized by the June 12 Pro-Democracy Movement of Nigeria. Utomi argued that the current political and economic structures, along with the "unworkable 1999 constitution," pose significant challenges to the country's democratic progress.
He called for Nigerians to embrace restructuring as a means to deepen democracy and strengthen the nation. Utomi suggested that by listening to the restructuring demands of groups like Afenifere and Ohaneze, President Tinubu could gain the electorate's confidence.
Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, a former finance minister, expressed optimism about Nigeria's future, highlighting the push for a new, viable constitution. Similarly, Dr. Wahab Shittu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, emphasized the importance of a democratic culture and a people-led constitution, advocating for a national referendum to legitimize any new constitution.
The June 12 Pro-Democracy Movement of Nigeria called on President Tinubu to initiate a national dialogue process that could lead to the creation of a democratic people's constitution. The convener, Mr. Wale Okunniyi, noted that such actions would honor the legacy of June 12 activists.
