PDP Faction to Screen Jonathan as Sole Presidential Aspirant for 2027

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki says it will screen former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday as its sole presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 elections.

The faction disclosed this in a statement announcing the screening exercise scheduled for May 19 at 10 a.m. nationwide.

According to the statement, Jonathan is the only presidential hopeful expected before the party’s 14-member screening committee, which includes former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang and former Foreign Affairs Minister Tom Ikimi.

Other committee members include Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Abdul Bulama, Esther Uduehi, Tony Aziegbemi, Sunday Solari and Anicho Okoro, who will serve as administrative secretary.

The faction said the screening exercise follows the party’s timetable and guidelines for the 2027 general elections.

Its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, had earlier announced that Jonathan successfully registered during the party’s fresh digital membership exercise directed by INEC.

The PDP faction also said it would screen 112 governorship aspirants, 198 senatorial aspirants, 748 House of Representatives hopefuls and 2,122 state assembly aspirants across the country.

Calls for Jonathan to contest the presidency again have intensified in recent weeks, with supporters staging rallies urging him to return to office. The former president has said he would consult widely before making a final decision on the race.
