PDP Zones 2027 Presidential Ticket to Southern Nigeria

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan and other qualified Southern members are eligible to contest the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 general election.

National Chairman Ambassador Tanimu Turaki made the announcement Tuesday after a closed-door meeting with former Vice President Namadi Sambo at his Abuja residence. The visit was part of a nationwide consultation by the PDP’s newly elected leadership following its National Elective Convention in Ibadan.

Turaki said the delegation, including members of the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, lawmakers, former governors, ministers, and state chairmen, aimed “to formally introduce the new National Working Committee members and update on party developments.”

He added, “Discussions focused on prospects, challenges, and strategies to reposition PDP as a strong electoral force. Sambo offered valuable guidance on restoring the party’s winning ways.”

Reaffirming loyalty, Sambo pledged to play a more active role. “He assured us of his commitment and availability whenever needed,” Turaki said.

Expressing confidence ahead of elections, Turaki stated, “The PDP remains the biggest political party in Africa. We are gearing up for the FCT Area Council polls and off-season governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun.”

Reacting to the dismissal of the Samuel Anyanwu case by an FCT High Court, Turaki called it a “vindication of PDP’s leadership,” saying the ruling upholds the Supreme Court’s decision and confirms the party’s convention legitimacy.

Addressing Jonathan’s 2027 ambitions, Turaki emphasized PDP’s zoning to the South. “The process will be open, fair, and transparent. Any Southern member can contest, and Nigerians will decide the candidate,” he said.

On pending legal issues, Turaki explained all documents are filed, with the judiciary determining the next steps. “We are ready to proceed once hearing dates are set,” he concluded.
