Peter Obi Criticises Focus on 2027 Politics Amid Rising Killings

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned what he described as the growing obsession among political actors with the 2027 general elections despite worsening insecurity across the country.

In a post shared on his verified X handle on Sunday, Obi said it was disturbing that political discussions were centred on election strategies while thousands of Nigerians had reportedly been killed or abducted within the first two months of 2026.

According to him, violent attacks, kidnappings and mass killings have been recorded in more than 25 states across the country, affecting communities in Zamfara, Kwara, Ondo, Kebbi, Edo, Benue, Adamawa and Plateau states, among others.

The former Anambra State governor said families across affected communities had continued to bury loved ones while national conversations remained focused on zoning arrangements, party structures and campaign calculations ahead of the next general elections.

Obi cited recent attacks in the Doruwa Babuje community of Plateau State, noting that citizens were grappling with loss and fear while political leaders and media attention were directed toward partisan issues.

He stressed that leadership should prioritise the protection of lives rather than electoral victories, urging political leaders to place human security at the centre of national governance.

Obi added that history would judge leaders not by political strategies but by actions taken to safeguard Nigerians during periods of crisis.

He concluded by reiterating his message that Nigeria’s future depends on prioritising citizens’ safety and dignity above political interests.
